Sustainable Australia through Vocational Education (SAVE) is a partnership project between SkillsTech Australia electrotechnology team and Education Queensland’s science teachers to provide entry level training in sustainable energy to students in years 10, 11 and 12 of high school. The SAVE project prepares students to fill skill shortages in the electro-technology industry, meet the challenges of changing community expectations regarding energy generation and consumption and engage students with new technologies. The training program was delivered in a blended learning format using online learning resources, workshops, practical demonstrations and work placement to facilitate delivery state-wide including remote and regional areas. A major element of the SAVE project has been the development of e-learning resources capable of being delivered in a blended learning environment. Mobile Solar Training Centres are also under construction. These are mobile mini homes that have been built to be used in schools for students to complete practical projects and assessments. The project 1. Developed a comprehensive blended learning resource including assessment covering 6 competencies: • UEENEEE001B Apply OHS practices in the workplace • UEENEEE003B Solve problems in extra-low voltage single path circuits • UEENEEE004B Solve problems in multiple path dc circuits • UEENEEK012B Provide basic sustainable energy solutions for energy reduction in domestic premises • UEENEEK013B Apply sustainable energy practice in daily activities • UEENEEK014B Promote sustainable energy practice in the community 2. Developed and implemented a professional development training program for science teachers to enable them to confidently teach the Sustainable Energy Program to students. 3. Developed Mobile Solar Training Centres to enable the delivery of the practical components of the course to remote and regional Schools, enabling the program to be delivered in a truly blended way. Education Queensland science teachers are undertaking a professional development training program to enhance their knowledge and skills in sustainable energy. |
