Effective Communication - Virtually Anywhere

RTO:
TAFESA North (TAFE Start)
Project category:
Empowering Learners
Industry area:
General education (eg LLN)
Learner group(s):
Women
State/territory:
SA
Project Year:
2009
The problem/opportunity being addressed:

There are currently no on-line courses in the Women's Education Program in TAFESA across South Australia. This limits access for women who are regional, rural, have social or economic barriers that prevent them from attending on campus courses or who do not have the capacity to undertake external print based courses.
The learners/clients and how they will benefit:

This project will target 10 existing learners within the Women's Education Program across the state to trial the use of Second Life as an online teaching and learning environment. The learners in the project will benefit by completing a specific unit, 'Work Effectively in Others', and contribute to the development of future accessible on-line courses specifically for women across the state.
How the training is currently delivered:

Currently the unit 'Work Effectively in Others' is not avaiable off campus in any form. Whilst some units from the Women's Education Certificate courses are available via print based external study, these are limited in number. This is because interaction between learners is seen as a critical aspect of the teaching and learning process and external study in it's current form cannot support this need.
How the innovation will change current delivery:

The pilot will provide us with the foundation we need to develop on-line delivery that is pedagogically sound, relevant and engaging for the learner. The experience gained through the pilot in the use of Second Life and Moodle along with the accompanied development of resouces that can support future on-line development and delivery, is what we need to embed the changes we want to make.
