The problem/opportunity being addressed:
Previous students and industry feedback has indicated a desire and need to have more practical experience before vocational placement and hence entering or re-entering the workforce. There are also many students who do not wish to engage in elearning as they do not see it as a part of working in aged/disability/community care. We propose to develop a virtual organisation with the input of a student reference group and staff. The virtual organisation will offer the learners a simulated online workplace environment with simulated working life learning activities and tasks. The project will involve the students in e-learning and assist them to become engaged in their learning. At the same time they will gain the experience of a “virtual organisation”. Students will develop and consolidate technical skills and become engaged in e-learning. This will empower them to explore other e-learning opportunities which they can use once they are in the workforce.

The learners/clients and how they will benefit:
The learners targeted are those who have never participated or have not participated for some years in the workforce. This includes school leavers, long term unemployed, mature aged students, return to work and students from non-English speaking backgrounds. In our experience these learners have not been keen or do not have the skills to engage in e-learning. |
How the training is currently delivered:
With a combination of face to face in class rooms and in the workplace with the use of some activities delivered by moodle (this was usually linked to the specific lecturer involved and the unit within the course that they were delivering). Similarly on line quizzes and the internet for assessement and research. |
How the innovation will change current delivery:
It will provide an online learning envronment to similate work place roles and responsibilities. The use of the virtual organisation and moodle will be from an holistic course perspective rather than just something that some lecturers do and others don't. Overall a more consolidated approach to using elearning in our teaching practice. |
