The problem/opportunity being addressed:

Common Ground has met key targets in most aspects but is having most difficulty with engaging its tenants in Education and Training due to the characteristics of the particular client group. Many tenants have complex needs which sometimes take precedence over their learning. Tenants need to be able to access friendly non confrontational learning opportunities with minimal time and place restrictions.
The learners/clients and how they will benefit:

The targeted groups include the homeless, those at risk of homelessness and low income earners (under $40,501 per annum). Common Ground's assertive outreach program to increase independent living skills uses the "Outcome Star" model. A component of blended e-learning will be introduced by the project aligned to the Outcome Star model and supported and promoted by the organisation's service provision coordinators. The positive outcomes of achieving some personal learning milestones, however small, will encourage tenants who may otherwise have been denied success in their education.
How the training is currently delivered:

Some face to face non award based courses have been offered on site at the Common Ground building in Franklin St with regular client participation and successful outcomes. When these were extended to delivery requiring travel to an outside organisation, the courses were not successful. Several additional ad hoc training sessions have been offered on-site on an occasional basis.
How the innovation will change current delivery:

Learners will be able to access courses in their own space and at their own pace. They can work through a range of small learning objects specifically developed for low levels of literacy which are presented in an engaging and not necessarily traditional format. The ability to link this learning to accredited VET units in an innovative way will encourage uptake of the model. Learners will be supported by the organisation's service provider staff with whom they are familiar.
