The problem/opportunity being addressed:

To develop an enhanced online learning management system (LMS) to be used as a platform for to assist in the blended delivery of the BSB51107 Diploma of Management to students from WA Country Health Services (WACHS) (Kimberley region) and Fremantle Hospital and Health Service (FHHS). This LMS will provide students with additional resources and a social networking community to stay in touch and provide links and networks from city to country.

The learners/clients and how they will benefit:

The e-learning program is being developed for learners from WACHS and FHHS for the Diploma of Management. These are health professionals including nurses, doctors and other health care professionals and managers who have immense and varied experience with people but often limited experience with computers. The majority of learners are aged over 40 and have been working in the Health Industry for a number of years. Learners from the Kimberley region are geographically isolated and do not have the opportunity to network with other learners as easily as the FHHS group.

The majority of learners from FHHS come to the program with significant management experience with some units being able to be assessed purely on an RPL or assessment only basis. Some learners from WACHS have less managerial experience but are in roles with significant opportunities to act in management roles and also to implement the knowledge and skills from the Diploma of Management into the workplace. There is a discrepancy in the level of experience between students of both the sectors. This e-learning program will help them fill that gap.

The enhanced e-learning model proposed is necessary to:
* Provide additional support and resources to rural and remote participants. * Encourage a sense of community within the group and to facilitate links between metro and rural and remote health professionals. * Provide support for remote learners studying in isolation. * Increase motivation through a sense of community.
* Access information whenever and wherever they can to ensure that they complete the qualification. * Have an access to Websites relevant to their learning content. * Execute sustainable practices (no files, no postage, bookmarked sites, only print out what need and is relevant) can access when and where required. * Reduce costs and increase sustainable practices in terms of venue hire, travel or physical resources. E-learning can cost around 40% less than classroom delivery. * Reduce time away from work. E.g. a half-day program can be delivered in 2 hours online. * Allow variation of progress through the program. Learners can move ahead of the group, as resources are readily available online, if they are ready. * Increase the sustainability and social cohesion of professionals in regional, rural and remote areas.

The learners who are being targeted in this project are technical experts who have been promoted to a managerial role, experienced managers and others who wish to manage in the future in the Health Industry. The learners range from experienced managers running significant departments, rural and remote GPs to Health Clerks who act in a management position when required. Where there is a significant amount of managerial experience these individuals have been encouraged to apply for RPL in the relevant areas. All learners have access to the internet on a regular basis and know how to access e-learning currently being offered. Learning needs include be interesting, interactive and relevant targeted training, using the principles of adult education that will provide them with the skills and knowledge to successfully supervise and manage employees and their department. Assessment for the units chosen has been designed to fit in around with operational and organisational requirements which will add value to the training process.

The solution will be to provide additional resources along with a social community to meet these learners needs.

How the training is currently delivered:

The BSB51107 Diploma of Management has recently commenced and is being delivered to 15 students from WACHS who are located in a range of diverse locations across the Kimberley and also 30 senior staff from FHHS. The methodology varies in each location:

* FHHS: Monthly workshops.
* WACHS: External supported delivery.

All students are supported by our current foray into e-learning which consists of unit outlines and units of competency, a wiki which contains a discussion forum, Q&A page and also a list of resources.

How the innovation will change current delivery:

The innovation embedded in the Kimberley Link project will help assist students take the program in a blended delivery format. This way, they can complete studying for the program offline, which is 50% of the project. 30% of the learning will come through with the help of a facilitator who will also be present online 24x7 for assessing students assignments, third-party reports and project sheets. The rest of the 20% learning will take place online with the help of the additional resources. Along with the resources, students also have access to an online community where they can share their views and ideas.

The aim of the project is to expand the range of online learning opportunities and resources available to support these students. This will be through the development of the LMS (Moodle) which will contain learning content, resources and templates relevant to each unit of study as well as a social community to interact with other Diploma Students This e-learning program will be used as a platform to assist in the blended delivery of Diploma of Management.

Pivot Case study Hi Ken,Love your blog.I met you on Olympic iutagnruaion while Jennny was guiding at Praxis but you might not remember.I love learning with the mood at ChinesePod as well practice with native Chinese whenever I can.If you're interested in self learning, I came across a book Pragmatic Thinking and Learning by Andy Hunt. One of the challenge with the technology is the constantly learning approach. Insightful contents :- the Dreyfus model: a model per skill.- the cognitives in our brain and how to effectively use them.- tips: mind map, morning pages technique which are now my source of ideas.I have my own mental framework for languages. Like programming, structure and pattern matching (grammar) are fundamental. Then vocabulary can be assimilated with time.As your new year resolution, you should post shorter.
